Girls Track Try-out Letter

Dear student athlete & parents,

  • Tryouts for the girl’s track team will be held after school from 3:15 – 4:50 on Tuesday, August 28 thru Thursday, August 31, weather permitting.  If necessary, first cuts will be made after the 3rd day of try-outs where we select the fastest 10-15 girls and have a 4th day of tryouts (Friday, August 31) for the remaining athletes.  Athletes are encouraged to attend all three, possibly four days of tryouts.
  • The team will be selected based on times.  All runners are strongly encouraged to run every event during tryouts.  Events that we will be running are:

55m

100m

200m

400m

1600m

Shot put

  • Please keep in mind that we can only run three athletes in sprinting events during a meet, however, we can run up to eight in the 400, 800, & 1600.  Therefore, runners that can run longer distances not only have a better chance of making the team, but will have more opportunities to run in the meets.  30-35 individuals will make the track team, selections for these spots will be based on your times during tryouts, however, please keep in mind that we also need 3 girls to throw the Shot Put every meet so someone who is slower but can throw the shot could possibly be selected.
  • 6th, 7th, & 8 graders compete against one another, and we understand that there can be a big difference in size, speed, and athleticism among the grades, therefore we always keep at least three 6th graders on the team.
  • In order to try out for the team you must have a completed and current (dated after May 1, 2018) sports physical on file with the Athletic Director, as well as a completed concussion training class.  Physicals and concussion training must be turned in prior to tryouts, we will not accept any paperwork on the day of tryouts.
  • Weather can be unpredictable this time of year so please come prepared.  As long as it’s not raining we run outside every day.  We strongly recommend that athletes bring additional layers of clothing in case it’s a cold afternoon.  Athletes are also encouraged to remain hydrated, bring water to tryouts, drink water throughout the day and avoid sodas or sugary sports drinks.
  • Rides must be at Saunders at 5:00 pm.  Any athlete whose ride is not here must get on the activity bus.  Please make plans now as to how you’ll be getting home if you make the team.  We have activity buses every day for tryouts, but during the season we only have buses on Tuesday and Thursday at 5:00 pm and Wednesday’s at 4:30, you must arrange rides on Monday and Friday to be here at 5:00 pm.

Good luck at tryouts,

Mr. Anderson
