Students in Mrs. Armstrong’s  Language Arts will begin reading

 The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate.  There will be a writing assignment, a video lecture, a worksheet for after reading to monitor comprehension, and a weekly power point all found on Google Classroom. It is important that you check  Google Class daily.

 Language Arts instructional time is scheduled on Mondays from 8:30-10:00 with office hours from 12:00 TO 1:30

A Message from Mrs. Armstrong

Hello Students & Families,

As we are out of school, know that we miss you, our classroom community, and our time together.  I care about you and want you to stay healthy and safe during this time.  I am here for you  during this time and if you need anything please email me at

To ensure maximum communication, we were asked to provide a snapshot of our learning plan for the year, what we have already covered and what will be covered next, some activities that students can work on to review this week (3/23-3/27), and a statement about any assignments/projects that were pending when we left.  

In 8th Grade Language Arts, the curriculum is guided by READING, WRITING, and GRAMMAR targets, which we hit every class period in some manner (Please see a copy of my targets on this website for specific learning targets)  We started the year practicing the reading targets through short stories. We then pivoted our main focus to the writing and grammar targets as we prepared for the Writing SOL. Our Writing SOL was administered on 3/10 and 3/12 and we are done with formal writing and grammar instruction this year.  We will still continue to practice writing targets but the instruction focus turns back to reading. Our goal for the rest of the year was to practice with these reading targets in 3 different genres: novels, non-traditional readings (instruction manuals, flyers, etc), and poetry.  

When the time comes to begin focusing on new topics, we will work on the reading targets within these three genres, most likely focusing on novels to begin with. When these assignments start, I will be utilizing Google Classroom and will keep up updated via email with any instructions/directions and resources you may need. 

Per PWCS guidance, there is not to be any new assignments or graded work assigned at this time.  As mentioned in a previous email, here are the the best ways to practice/review from what we have went over so far:

  • Read, every day, for at least 30 minutes a day. This is quite frankly the best thing you can do for your academic, social, and mental health. 

  • Write.  This is an unprecedented time you are experiencing.  Keep a journal of how your life is changing, facts about the news (the latest mandates, etc.) your thoughts, your activities, and anything else that you find important enough to write on the page.  Writing is one of the best ways to help manage a new situation.

  • is a great resource to read nonfiction articles.  You can use CLEVER to sign in. 
  • is a great resource to practice grammar skills.  I know we just finished the Writing SOL, but it's not like grammar is magically going away.

We ended our Writing Unit on March 12th, and therefore have no outstanding assignments, projects, or instruction that need to be tied up.  Gradebooks have been updated to show grades for any assignments turned in late for our writing unit. These assignments had a final due date (due to the Writing SOL being 3/10 and 3/12) of February 28th.  For any assignment with an NHI, a student may still complete it and turn it in to remove the NHI.

We are all in this together and my hope is for each one of you to stay healthy and safe while we are out.

Welcome to Mrs. Armstrong's Class!!

I am sooo excited to see and welcome all of you back to school after your summer vacations. Hope you had a fabulous time with your friends and family, and I can't wait to hear all about it. I look forward to teaching you lots of new things and making this experience as fun and enjoyable as possible. I know you will all do GREAT this year!!

The course follows the language arts VA SOLs in oral language, reading, and writing. Students will work with groups and through presentations to improve their conversation skills, explore different genres to establish an appreciation for all types of literature, and have opportunities to express themselves through different types of writing.

Class Syllabus


Students who receive below 70% on a summative assessment will remediate and retest on the given target.  This is not optional.  Any student is eligible to retake a summative assessment if they ask for and complete a teacher approved remediation assignment. (Special circumstances at teacher discretion).  After these criteria have been met and the student has retested, the new score will be added to the gradebook.  Both grades will be identified in the gradebook in the comments section.
