Hey guys!  I want to let you know that I miss all of you. I am sad that we will not have a normal end to the school year. There were so many books and stories that I wanted to read with you.  Nevertheless, I want you to stay safe, healthy, and happy during this time.  If you have any questions just send an email to murphykm@pwcs.edu. Also, don't forget to come see me next year and say hi when we pass in the hall.

Currently, I am on maternity leave until further notice (Until at least 4/24).  Please know that timing with all of this is absolutely crazy and I could not have predicted this to happen.

We were asked to provide a look at all the targets we have covered for the year and some review activities of the targets covered. I have worked with Ms. Simpson and she has placed all the notes and the activities in the Files and Documents tab on the left side of her class web page.

Ms. Simpson and I use the same or similar slides for instruction.  The targets are:

  1. Elements of Fiction & Nonfiction
  2. Elements of Plot/Plot diagram
  3. Point of View
  4. Context Clues
  5. Cause & Effect
  6. Compare & Contrast
  7. Fact & Opinion
  8. Main Idea and Supporting Details
  9. Making Inferences/Drawing Conclusions
  10. Summarizing
  11. Text Features
  12. Text Structure/Author's Organizational Patterns
  13. Problem and Solution
  14. Characterization

The remain targets that we did not cover prior to leaving school are:

  1. Transition Words
  2. Mood/Tone
  3. Word Choice
  4. Poetry
  • rhyme
  • rhythm
  • stanza

   5. Figurative Language

  • simile
  • metaphor
  • idiom
  • hyperbole
  • alliteration
  • personification
  • onomatopoeia

Information for these targets are on this class page in the Fiction and NOnfiction folders.  For this info, look on the left of this screen to the Files and Documents folder.  Look in the Fiction and Nonfiction for the power points.  In addition, there are other slides on Ms. Simpson's webpage in the Quarter 3 and 4 folder.

I do want to send some suggestions on what you can do to keep those brains active in our Language Arts world! Let me know how it is going!

  • Read, every day, for at least 30 minutes a day. This is the best thing you can do for your academic, social, and mental health.
  • Write.  This is an unprecedented time you are experiencing.  Keep a journal of how your life is changing, facts about the news (the latest mandates, etc…) your thoughts, your activities, and anything else that you find important enough to write on the page.  Writing is one of the best ways to help manage a new situation.
  • Newsela.com is a resource that has current and up to date news articles

In addition, each of you participates in Achieve3000.  PLEASE continue to use this program.  You have access to your account through August.  While I have assigned articles to you for the next two months, they are not required for you to complete.  Try to do 1-2 articles a week.  This program is a great way to keep up your reading and writing skills.  Remember you need a 70% or higher to achieve mastery of the skill/article.

Once I return from maternity leave, more instruction will occur.  For now, please read and write and work on Achieve 3000.  THere will be more information forthcoming from all of your teachers.
